General Practice Law Firm
Internet Marketing that Works
When you have a law firm that serves clients in several different practice areas, how can you effectively reach all those different segments of the legal marketplace? With other types of marketing, that can be difficult.
With a strong Internet presence and a FindLaw site, however, you can devote specific pages to specific areas of your practice. With a well-organized site, a potential client searching for an estate planning lawyer, for example, would not need to wade through information about family law.

The general practice law firm has a challenge. How can you quickly and easily direct people to information about the legal matter they need help with? With a separate, substantive page on each area of practice (or two or three pages on an area of particular importance), your potential client can quickly go to relevant information.
- What are your practice areas? Potential clients want to know that you handle the area of law in which they need your counsel. If they search in the Yellow Pages or on the Internet for a "lawyer," there are too many options. If they narrow the search to "divorce lawyer," they still have plenty of options — and a greater chance of finding you if you have a divorce page on your Web site.
- Even in a general practice, be specific. A potential client is coming to you for one problem. Later, of course, that client may come back to your firm for help with other legal matters. For example, someone who comes to your firm for help with a business startup may return for help with estate planning or for a car accident personal injury.
- Why should a site visitor select your law firm? What makes your firm different from another firm? Have you been serving clients in the area for a long time? Do you offer personal attention or flexible office hours? Do you have an excellent reputation in the community? Think about those things that differentiate you from your competition.
- How does your general practice benefit your clients? While some potential clients may prefer a law firm focused on one area of law, others may see the value of a long-term relationship with a law firm that will be there for them no matter what legal matters they are facing — real estate, family law, criminal defense, immigration, and others.
